Thermodynamic evolution of cosmological baryonic gas: I. Influence of non-equipartition processes

چکیده
Using N-body/hydrodynamic simulations, the influence of non-equipartition processes on the thermal and dynamical properties of cosmological baryonic gas is investigated. We focus on a possible departure from equilibrium between electrons, ions and neutral atoms in low temperature (10–10 K) and weakly ionized regions of the intergalactic medium. The simulations compute the energy exchanges between ions, neutrals and electrons, without assuming thermal equilibrium. They include gravitation, shock heating and cooling processes, and follow self-consistently the chemical evolution of a primordial composition hydrogen-helium plasma without assuming collisional ionization equilibrium. At high redshift, a significant fraction of the intergalactic medium is found to be warmer and weakly ionized in simulations with non-equipartition processes than in simulations in which the cosmological plasma is considered to be in thermodynamic equilibrium. With a semi-analytical study of the out of equilibrium regions we show that, during the formation of cosmic structures, departure from equilibrium in accreted plasma results from the competition between the atomic cooling processes and the elastic processes between heavy particles and electrons. Our numerical results are in agreement with this semi-analytical model. Therefore, since baryonic matter with temperatures around 10 K is a reservoir for galaxy formation, non-equipartition processes are expected to modify the properties of the objects formed.

Thermodynamic evolution of the cosmological baryonic gas : II . Galaxy formation
The problem of galaxy formation and its dependence on thermodynamic properties is addressed by using Eulerian hydrodynamic numerical simulations of large scale structure formation. Global galaxy properties are explored in simulations including gravitation, shock heating and cooling processes, and following self-consistently the chemical evolution of a primordial composition hydrogen-helium plas...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
متن کاملThe Impact of Non-equipartition on Cosmological Parameter Estimation from Sunyaev-zel’dovich Surveys
The collisionless accretion shock at the outer boundary of a galaxy cluster should primarily heat the ions instead of electrons since they carry most of the kinetic energy of the infalling gas. Near the accretion shock, the density of the intracluster medium is very low and the Coulomb collisional timescale is longer than the accretion timescale. Electrons and ions may not achieve equipartition...
متن کاملIdealized models for galactic disk formation and evolution in ‘realistic’ ΛCDM haloes
We study the dynamics of galactic disk formation and evolution in ‘realistic’ Λ cold dark matter haloes with idealized baryonic initial conditions. We add rotating spheres of hot gas at z = 1.3 to two fully cosmological dark-matter-only halo (re)simulations. The gas cools according to an artificial and adjustable cooling function to form a rotationally supported galaxy. The simulations evolve i...

I explain the motivation of my thesis work and briefly review the relevant background. In the standard paradigm, galaxies are formed within dark matter halos and merge with each other after halo aggregation. In the first part, I briefly summarize the currently favored cosmological models, I introduce linear perturbation theory and I illustrate non-linear evolution with a spherical collapse mode...
